To Honor Bertha…
Susan W's pictures are incredible and captured the spirit of how we sent Bertha off on her voyage. It was wonderful to see most of the board out there saying their goodbyes, and also Paula, who was part of the team when Bertha was purchased! Click here to read the whole story.

Lifting Spirits at Princeton's Paddle for Pink
Paddle for Pink, in support of the Breast Cancer Resource Center YWCA Princeton, on Sunday, June 7, was more than just a Regatta. The women (many of whom had breast cancer), men and teens who paddled or came to watch had someone in their lives or a loved one touched by breast cancer. Many proudly wore Breast Cancer Survivor shirts.
On this beautiful day, the touching Flowers on the Water Ceremony was a memorial to honor those women who lost their battle with breast cancer and those currently living with the disease. Seven boats, held together at the gunnels by paddlers, circled as one to face the crowds on the banks. Each paddler held up a pink carnation and tossed it into Lake Mercer following the ceremony.
Memories, prayers, hopes, thanks and tears abounded as the Schuyllkill Dragon Grand Masters were thanked by the breast cancer boats for their support. The SDGMs won gold medals and the Club Challenge Award for the Women’s Division, but more important was the feeling of helping to support the cause by “raising awareness of breast cancer; showing that there is life after this disease; encouraging others to face their dragons with an indomitable spirit; and to look beyond today to a future filled with hope and promise.

SD Host The Back On My Feet Club
On October 20, 2008, the Schuylkill Dragons invited the men of Back on Feet to enjoy a day of paddling and picnicking. Back on My Feet is a non-profit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of Philadelphia's homeless population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem. Despite some initial apprehension, the new paddlers enjoyed the teamwork and camaraderie of dragon boating. The two clubs capped off the afternoon with a picnic on the shores of the river. |

SD Women Compete as part of Team USA in Australia
“Congrats to all the SD's who endured blood, sweat and tears in an effort to make the Team USA. I am very proud of all my teammates who persevered and didn't quite make it. Just remember; every experience, negative or positive, contributes to one's growth and further accomplishments. Win or lose, mutual respect and support keeps our team spirit strong.”—Joyce Barnes, aka “Battling Barnes”
Teams from
eighteen countries met in Sydney, Australia,
in September 2007. Team USA won the
Nation’s Cup, and the USA Open Team set
a new world record in the 500 meter distance. |

Dragon boating, from the team supporter’s perspective
By Paul Reichert, Schuylkill Dragons Supporter
Dragon Boat teams are fairly large groups whose members devote significant time and effort to achieve the strength, timing, and coordination to get the most out of their dragon boats and themselves. It’s hours of practice and out-of-the boat exercise, and the mental preparation that builds to race times. Races are intense competitions, raw bursts of synchronized power, exciting to watch with thrilling victories, photo finishes, and some losses on which to reflect and build. Associated with these dragon boaters are friends and family who support and take delight in these efforts.
